Stay tuned, and make sure to let us know what your favorite live songs are, so we can work on those first! |

Kim Urhahn Interview |
|
Posted by OMB on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007 |
|
Kim has been featured in the annual newsletter called the Black Page put out by Ted Goode Music in Brandon, MB. Here's the interview:
KIM URHAHN....A NEW KIND OF MONSTER For anyone who has dared for a second to make believe that a woman cannot rock a kit just as hard as a man, prepare to get your proverbial backside whooped. Vancouver native and former Lillix skin basher Kim Urhahn is more than prepared to prove you wrong; and in the process you may just learn something. The newest employee of Taye Drums Canada was gracious enough to answer a few of my queries regarding drums, Japan, Steven Tyler and The Pink Monster. This is one drummer we should all aspire to be. Enjoy. Kim how did you get hooked up with Lillix? I auditioned for Lillix in Vancouver in 2002. I had met their manager, Jonathan Simkin, through another project that I had been in for 3 years called Superchild. The singer, Nikki Hurst, now has her own, self titled, project that you can check out at www.myspace.com/nikkihurstband. I recently learned you have shared the stage with one of my hero's Steven Tyler. How did that come about? Lillix got asked to play a show for a New York based radio station called Z 100 at Giant Stadium in New Jersey. We played at about noon and Aerosmith went on a 10pm…lol…it makes us sound way cooler than we actually were. What would you say is your most memorable moment onstage? I have a few memorable moments, but one was when Lillix was touring Japan and I looked into the crowd of about 2000 people and saw a sign that read: Happy Birthday Kim. I couldn't believe that these kids don't even speak the same language as me and they made the effort, not only in learning all the lyrics of the songs, but also to write out a sign just for me. Japan is one of my favourite places on Earth. What would you say has been your worst onstage disaster? Lillix was playing a show at the Knitting Factory in New York and I was using a minidisk player for tracks with a click. I guess I was rocking extra hard that night, it fell off the riser while we were playing and the audio started skipping in the middle of the show!..lol…that sure taught me lesson. From then on, it was taped securely to the rest of my stuff. What got you started in drumming? I saw the movie Rock'n'roll Highschool featuring he Ramones and fell in love with the drums. It still took 2 years of asking to get my parents to let me play though. How would you describe your sound and what do you do to achieve it? This is always the hardest question to answer, but I guess I'm a pretty "meat and potatoes" kind of player. I like to pick out things in the melody and put them into the beats that I play, but I'm not a flashy player. I don't play a lot of crazy fills. Man, I don't know…ask my bass player…lol! Or you can judge for yourself at www.sugarblade.com or www.myspace.com/sugarblade Who are your biggest influences in music? As far as drummers go, I'm a huge Jeff Porcaro fan. I also really like Stewart Copeland, Steve Jordan, Levon Helm, Stanton Moore. There's so many! As far as bands go, The Ramones, The Police, The Gogos – they got me started anyways. What got you into World Music? I auditioned for University of Victoria and bombed, but the teacher, Sal Fererras, liked me and thought I had guts, so he asked me to come out and audition for the Community College in Vancouver. At the time, the Latin percussion program was still a pilot, so I was able to float between the Classical and Jazz programs, as well as, take private percussion lessons with Sal. I actually dropped the drum set for 3 years while I was at Vancouver Community College and focused on congas and marimba among other percussion instruments. How has your training in Latin/Brazilian percussion influenced you behind a kit? I think by learning about Latin/Brazilian rhythms and cultures I have expanded my ideas while playing drum set. I spent about 6 months re-training myself on the kit after college, but it was well worth it. However, I never learned to play a lot of the traditional Latin/Brazilian rhythms on the drum set, so by no means do I consider myself a Latin kit player. What other instruments are you capable of playing? Like every good Chinese kid, I was put into piano lessons really early, so I play a bit of piano…lol. I also played the trumpet in high school band. And currently, I front a band called In Davey's Grip www.indaveysgrip.com or www.myspace.com/indaveysgrip which I sing and play guitar. What is your process when you are writing for an album? I've never sat down and tried to write an entire album all in one go, I write songs and then hope that I can get 12 or so good ones for an album. In Sugarblade, Alec (guitar) and Miguel (vox) or Greg (bass) will bring an idea to the band and then we'll make a song out of it as a band. In In Davey's Grip I'll usually write a melody with basic chords or a riff (Bassist, Greg, is good at writing riffs) and then we'll put a song together as a band. How has being a drummer influenced you as a vocalist/guitarist? The songs I write as a vocalist/guitarist are very rhythmically driven because I think like a drummer. Although, some of that changes when Andrew (guitar) gets a hold of my ideas because his style is really bluesy. Also, I've noticed that I take some of my vocal cues from the bass and drums. I'm probably one of the only vocalists that needs bass up in the monitor! I'm just so used to taking cues from the bass as a drummer! Your vocal style is unique and really very good. Were you trained or did you discover your own voice? I trained in musical theatre as a kid. My sister, Cory, and I were both involved with a musical theatre studio called Singin, Dancin, Actin, Studios. The director, Pat Waldron, was our first vocal coach. With the SDA choir we were featured as the children's chorus in Joseph's Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat when it came through Vancouver with Donny Osmond. Cory is still singing, as well, although her and I are very different. Judge for yourself: www.corylee.net. Do you feel more at home on front of or behind the kit? Fronting a band is still very new to me, so I'll have to say behind the kit. It's so safe there…in your house. And sometimes I feel left out too. I feel like the band is rocking so hard and I'm singing the melody over all that, but it's not the same. I'm still learning…I'm lucky that Ryan (drums) is really supportive of the fact that I am a drummer too. Are there any plans for you to conquer the other side of the glass and produce? I'd love to produce. Both Sugarblade and In Davey's Grip have CD's that are produced by the bands. I still think there's more for me to learn before I can call myself a producer though. What in your opinion makes a track worth listening to? I like music that is different. I'm still a sucker for a catchy melody, but I'm so tired of bands all trying to sound like each other. I've got a lot of respect for bands that do their own thing. For example, Lillix toured with a band called The Start www.thisisthestart.com that I fell in love with. What's with radio stations not supporting girl-fronted bands that rock!? Going completely off topic how did you wind up with Taye? I've known the people behind Taye Canada for years: I bought my first drum set from Ray Ayotte at Drums Only, as well as took drum lessons there for years. I went to summer camp with Aimee Ayotte as kids and I took drum lessons from Elliot Polsky for years. Later on, I worked at Tom Lee Music (a Taye dealer) off an on for 4 years where I connected with Taye. After my employment with Tom Lee ended, Taye was nice enough to offer me a gig with them. Now that you are with Taye what becomes of the "Pink Monster? Are you still a Pearl endorser? (Editors note: for those who don't know the "Pink Monster" is Kim's trademark pink drumset) No, it wouldn't be fair to anyone involved if I were to continue with Pearl as an endorsing drum company. Upon accepting the gig at Taye, I ended my endorser relationship with Pearl. I still have the Pink Monster, but don't play it anymore. I can't bear to sell it. I'm working on getting myself a Taye Studio Maple. Right now, I'm borrowing an Indigo Blue kit from backline at Taye, until my kit is made. How do you approach teaching? I think it's really important for my students to learn the basic rudiments, beats and music reading, BUT it's really important, especially for younger students, to have fun. For beginning and intermediate students, I try to break up each lesson and do a section on music reading, a section on rudiments and then end the lesson playing beats and fills on the drum set. I encourage my students to play along with music they like and bring in songs if they can't figure out the beat. I also encourage them to form bands with their friends to gain experience playing with other instruments. For example, a lot of young drummers don't realize the importance of the relationship a drummer has with the bass player. What is on the horizon for you in 2007? Musically, my plan is to continue with Sugarblade and In Davey's Grip and keep playing as many shows as possible. With Taye, I'd like to get a drumset…lol…and keep working hard so eventually I can create a full time position for myself. |

Miguel and Alec were originally scheduled to play a short acoustic set of grunge era cover songs as part of a "Tribute to Grunge" fundraiser for our friends Crop Circle at The Backstage Lounge. Alec is unable to appear that night, but our good friend Brad Pedwell has stepped up to the plate, and will play guitar in Alec's absence. It will definitely be a very entertaining set, so come down on Sat. Sept. 16 to Backstage Lounge on Granville Island, and wonder at the marvel known as Shiver-blade. |
